BRITA LIND

Chief Marketing Officer, Prairie Clean Energy

Why I want to be on the SCC Board

I’m going to come right out and say it: I love being on boards. And I love being a business person. Match made in heaven, you might say. I find that when I’m in a room of business people, I’m in a room with people who know how to set goals and go after them. That group is soooo fun for me. And making positive change so that businesses can go do what they do best (and elevate this province at the same time) is exciting for me. I think (read: believe) Saskatchewan is on the cusp of an incredible renaissance that includes the rest of the world looking at us and say “where did this place come from anyway?” But you and I know where it came from — people who know how to work hard, who know how to believe, who know how to pick themselves up by their bootstraps and go. People who know how to succeed.

Also, I have three kids. They’re all getting older and as they get older I get a lot less interesting. So, hanging out with like-minded adults making this province better is where I want to be. That, and growing Prairie Clean Energy into a global bioenergy brand.

Board philosophy

Simple. Governance. Not operational. You hired the staff so they must be good. Let them do what they do best. Provide direction on outcomes. Provide long-term thinking and strategy. Listen twice as much as you talk (or more). Do what you said you were going to do.  Be accountable. Assume everyone has the best intentions.

Board & Committee Experience

Chair, Montessori School of Regina

  • Moved the board from operational to governance for this private, non-profit, independent school
  • Oversaw bylaw review
  • Put term limits in (and all the other stuff involved with better governance)
  • Put strategic plans in place
  • With my co-board awesome people put strategies in place to double the revenues (which means more students in the schools and growth).
  • Sat on numerous committees.

Creative Saskatchewan Creation Working Group

  • Sat on the working group that created Creative Saskatchewan, the gov’t agency responsible for economic development in the creative industries.
  • 1 year commitment, meeting every Friday

  • Worked on building the regulations and programs with the group

Creative Saskatchewan Nominations Committee

  • Was on a great committee with two other business people to get board members for the board of Creative Saskatchewan, as per the regulations.
  • We worked on enhancing the nominations process and presenting nominations to the Board.

Regina Pride Committee

  • In the early 2000s sat on the Regina Pride Committee to put on Pride Week.
  • (You know that great parade every year! When I started we would count and celebrate when we had 175 people! Now it’s up to what?!)
  • Responsible for helping with events and organizing. Wasn’t all me. Amazing committee.

What do you see as some of the strategic opportunities and challenges to be faced in the next 2-5 years?

  • Of course, recovering from that-thing-that-shall-not-be-named (and we WILL recover).
  • Getting business confidence, energy, and networking up again. Engaging again.
  • There is growth coming for this province; making sure we’re ready for it so Saskatchewan businesses and people reap the benefits.
  • Making sure businesses and people see the benefits of SCC and value it.
  • Ensuring this is a climate where Saskatchewan businesses and people thrive.
  • Keeping our young business people here, so they see this province as a place they can do business and succeed on a large scale — that success doesn’t like in other postal codes.

Personal Interests

  • Being a great parent
  • Being a great friend
  • Being a mentor, especially for female entrepreneurs
  • Writing plays
  • And, I think my next hobby will be range shooting.
